“Barsky’s approach to theater is
revolutionary.”
“A committed piece of underground
theater that refashions the Jewish storytelling tradition in a fusion of
hip-hop beats, jazz-inspired improvisation, and slam-style lyricism.”
TJT's first
piece, Coming from a Great Distance, created by Corey Fischer, Albert
Greenberg and Naomi Newman in 1978-79 was based on the Jewish
storytelling tradition. The company's founders instinctively sensed
that in story could be found the starting point for a new Jewish
theatre. Twenty Six years later, we came upon Tim Barsky and his
remarkable ensemble doing work in the same passionate spirit that
animated our earliest efforts and continues to drive us to stretch
boundaries. Boldly grabbing the tradition by its lapels and yanking
into the twenty-first century, Barsky et al create a world where the
ghosts of Hasidic storytellers meet street-smart cyber-punk bards in a
fusion that breaks new theatrical, literary and musical ground. We knew
immediately that nurturing this heartfelt work and bringing it to you
was of the highest priority. Prepare yourselves for a new experience
that brings the vital energy of spoken-word, hip-hop performance to the
ever-changing form we call Jewish theatre.
